Briullov, Karl [Brjullov], b 23 December 1799 in Saint Petersburg, d 23 June 1852 in Marciano near Rome, Italy. Painter, professor at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts (1836¨C48). A number of Ukrainian artists, including Ivan Soshenko, Dmytro Bezperchy, Apollon Mokrytsky, and Taras Shevchenko, studied with Briullov. He took an active part in emancipating Shevchenko from serfdom and later befriended him. His most famous work is The Last Day of Pompei (1830¨C3).
